Privacy Policy

1 Who We Are

Northern Numbers (northernnumbers.ca) is a free Canadian website providing financial calculators for personal use. We are based in Canada and operate in accordance with Canada's federal privacy legislation, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).

We are not a financial institution, investment dealer, or registered financial advisor. We provide tools to help Canadians understand and estimate their financial situations — nothing more.

2 Information We Collect

We collect minimal information. Here is a complete list of what we may collect:

• Email messages — your name, email address, and message, only when you voluntarily email us
• Analytics data — aggregate usage and performance information collected through Cloudflare Web Analytics, which does not use cookies. If we enable Google Analytics in the future, it would collect anonymous usage data (pages visited, time on site, device type, general location). Google Analytics is not currently active — see Section 5.
• Cookie data — small files stored in your browser, used as described in Section 6, including by Google in connection with advertising, with additional use possible in the future for analytics

We do not collect:

• Financial information entered into our calculators
• Names, emails, or personal details unless you voluntarily provide them by emailing us
• Payment or billing information of any kind
• Social insurance numbers or government identification

3 Calculator Data

All calculations performed on Northern Numbers happen entirely within your browser. When you enter numbers into a calculator — your income, mortgage amount, RRSP balance, or any other financial information — that data:

• Never leaves your device
• Is never sent to our servers
• Is never stored in a database
• Is never shared with any third party
• Disappears when you close or refresh the page

4 Contacting Us

Northern Numbers does not use a web-based contact form. If you email us through the address on our Contact page, we receive only the information you voluntarily include: your name (if given), email address, and message.

We use this information solely to respond to your inquiry. We will not:

• Add you to a mailing list without your explicit consent
• Share your contact information with any third party
• Use your email for marketing or promotional purposes

Emails you send us may be stored in our inbox for a reasonable period in order to maintain a record of our correspondence.

5 Analytics

Northern Numbers uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand site traffic and performance. It collects aggregate website usage and performance information, such as page views and page load performance metrics. Cloudflare Web Analytics does not use cookies or localStorage for analytics. Google Analytics is not currently enabled. We may enable Google Analytics in the future to understand how visitors use the site and improve our calculators and content.

If and when Google Analytics is enabled, it may collect the following anonymous information:

• Pages visited and time spent on each page
• How you arrived at the site (search engine, direct link, etc.)
• Device type and browser (e.g. iPhone, Chrome)
• General geographic location (country and city — not your exact address)
• New vs. returning visitor status

That data would be aggregated and anonymous — Google Analytics does not identify you personally. Google may use this data in accordance with their own privacy policy. This page will be updated to reflect present tense once Google Analytics is actually active.

6 Cookies

Cookies are small text files stored in your browser. Northern Numbers may use cookies for the following purposes:

• Analytics cookies — Not currently in use. Would be used by Google Analytics to track anonymous usage data if and when we enable it (see Section 5).
• Advertising cookies — Northern Numbers has Google AdSense advertising technology installed. Google, as a third-party vendor, may use cookies or similar technologies in connection with advertising, including to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other websites. Ads may not appear on every page or at all times (see Section 7). You can opt out of personalized advertising at google.com/settings/ads.
• Functional cookies — May be used to remember your preferences on the site

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers allow you to block or delete cookies. Note that disabling cookies may affect some features of the site. To learn more about managing cookies, visit allaboutcookies.org.

7 Advertising

Northern Numbers uses Google AdSense advertising technology. Google's advertising code is loaded on our pages, and Google may serve advertisements when AdSense makes them available. Ads may not appear on every page or at all times.

How advertising works on this site:

• Third-party vendors, including Google, may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites
• Google's advertising cookies allow Google and its partners to serve personalized ads based on your visits to this and other websites, where permitted
• Non-personalized or limited ads may be served instead where appropriate, based on your consent, your settings, or applicable requirements
• You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings
• You can also opt out through the Network Advertising Initiative opt-out page

Northern Numbers will never allow advertising that is deceptive, inappropriate, or that compromises the integrity of our calculators. Our results are never influenced by advertisers.

8 Third-Party Links

Our calculators and educational content may include links to third-party websites such as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Government of Canada pages, or financial institutions.

These websites are governed by their own privacy policies. Northern Numbers is not responsible for the privacy practices or content of any third-party websites. We encourage you to review the privacy policy of any site you visit.

9 Minors

Northern Numbers is not directed at or intended for use by minors. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 18.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will promptly delete that information.

10 Data Retention

We retain personal information only as long as necessary for the purpose it was collected:

• Calculator data — Not retained at all. It exists only in your browser session.
• Emails you send us — Retained in our inbox for as long as needed to address your inquiry, then deleted.
• Analytics data — Cloudflare Web Analytics collects aggregate usage and performance information, which is retained by Cloudflare under its own policies. No Google Analytics data is currently collected. If Google Analytics is enabled in the future, Google's default retention is 26 months, after which it is automatically deleted.

11 Your Rights

Under PIPEDA and applicable Canadian privacy law, you have the right to:

• Access — Request access to any personal information we hold about you
• Correction — Request that we correct inaccurate information
• Withdrawal of consent — Withdraw consent for us to use your information at any time
• Deletion — Request that we delete your personal information, subject to legal retention requirements
• Complaint — File a complaint with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada if you believe your privacy rights have been violated

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us using the information in Section 13.

12 Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. When we do:

• The updated policy will be posted on this page
• The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will be revised
• Significant changes will be noted prominently

We encourage you to review this page periodically. Your continued use of Northern Numbers after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
